Black Soldier Fly

The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) is a “wasp-like” in appearance fly that is naturally found in the western hemisphere but has since been distributed globally. Adults are black and can measure up to one inch in length. Similarly, the larvae can be quite large (one inch in length). Adults do not need to feed and are not attracted to homes and live for approximately two weeks. Larvae of this species are voracious feeders capable of consuming most organic wastes. In fact, the larvae can be harvested and in some instances used as a feed for select livestock, poultry, and aquaculture. The black soldier fly, if managed, is not a pest species. However, if colonization is not desired, its presence in animal waste in confined animal facilities can be challenging as resulting larvae can spill outside of the containment units making waste management challenging.
